About Convergence Pharmaceuticals

Convergence Pharmaceuticals Limited was a UK-based clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company specializing in the development of analgesic medicines for chronic pain. The company was established in October 2010, originating as a spinout from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) with the acquisition of several of GSK's neuroscience clinical assets. This formation was backed by a significant $35.4 million Series A financing from a syndicate of investors including Apposite Capital, New Leaf Venture Partners, and SV Life Sciences.

The company was led by a management team that included former GSK experts in pain research, with Dr. Clive Dix serving as the Chief Executive Officer and Simon Tate as the Chief Scientific Officer. The core of the business was to advance a pipeline of clinical-stage compounds that modulate specific ion channels, which are key points of convergence in chronic pain signaling pathways. This approach aimed to develop treatments with better efficacy and side-effect profiles than existing options.

The lead product candidate was CNV1014802, a small molecule state-dependent sodium channel blocker that preferentially targets the Nav 1.7 ion channel, a genetically validated target for pain. This drug showed positive results in Phase 2 clinical trials for treating trigeminal neuralgia (TGN), a severe and chronic facial pain condition, and also demonstrated potential for treating sciatica. Another key asset was CNV2197944, a state-dependent calcium channel (Cav2.2) blocker being developed for neuropathic and inflammatory pain.

In January 2015, just over four years after its inception, Convergence Pharmaceuticals was acquired by Biogen Idec (now Biogen). The deal involved an upfront payment of $200 million, with potential for an additional $475 million in milestone payments. The acquisition was a strategic move by Biogen to bolster its neurology portfolio and expertise in chronic pain research. Following the acquisition, Convergence was intended to continue its operations in Cambridge, U.K., under the leadership of its CSO, Simon Tate. However, in May 2017, Biogen closed the UK subsidiary as part of an R&D streamlining effort, with the pain therapy research being integrated into other Biogen locations.
