Controlled Power Technologies
A port-folio of low carbon powertrain related products at an advanced stage of development
About Controlled Power Technologies
Controlled Power Technologies (CPT), founded in 2007 by Nick Pascoe, established itself as a specialized developer of clean-tech solutions for the automotive sector before its acquisition. The company originated from assets and technologies acquired from Visteon Corporation and secured an exclusive global license for Switched Reluctance Motors from Emerson Corporation in December 2007. Based in Laindon, with an additional site in Coventry, UK, CPT focused on addressing the growing demand for reduced vehicle emissions and improved fuel economy.
Prior to its acquisition by Federal-Mogul Powertrain on November 16, 2017, CPT operated as a key development partner for automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The company's business model centered on designing, developing, and licensing advanced powertrain technologies that enabled vehicle hybridization and electrification. Its clients were primarily powertrain manufacturers for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and industrial engines seeking to meet stringent emissions regulations. On June 27, 2011, the company secured $638K in a Series A funding round from investors including National Technology Enterprises Company, Entrepreneurs Fund, Conduit Ventures, and Turquoise.
CPT's product portfolio was centered on 12V and 48V electric motor-generators designed for a variety of applications. Key product families included CPT SpeedStart® and SpeedTorq®, a line of motor-generators for engine and driveline electrification in start-stop and mild-hybrid systems. The company also developed COBRA, a liquid-cooled electric supercharger for medium to heavy-duty applications, and TIGERS®, an energy recovery system that recuperates energy from exhaust gasses to generate electricity. These technologies offered benefits such as improved fuel economy, enhanced performance and drivability, and significant reductions in CO2 and NOx emissions. Following the acquisition, the business was integrated into Federal-Mogul, operating under the name "Federal-Mogul Controlled Power Ltd," to bring its technologies to volume production.
