ContextWeb
Digital media services company providing real-time online ad performance data for businesses and brands
About ContextWeb
Founded in 2000, ContextWeb, Inc. carved out a niche in the burgeoning AdTech market as a provider of contextual advertising solutions. Initially known as Adsdaq, the firm developed technology to serve advertisers and publishers by identifying keywords within web page content to deliver relevant advertising. This page-level, contextual technology formed the basis of its core service, enabling clients to engage customers with targeted ads and improve revenue.
The company's primary offering was the ADSDAQ Ad Exchange, which distinguished itself by granting both advertisers and publishers significant control over ad transactions. Announced in May 2007, the exchange allowed publishers to set a specific 'Ask' price (CPM) for their inventory, a departure from the prevalent revenue-share model. If the exchange couldn't meet the set price, it would serve a default ad, allowing publishers to better manage and project their revenue. This model catered to a wide range of clients, from over 12,000 buyers and sellers, including more than 100 of the comScore top 250 properties and numerous leading interactive agencies. Key executives included Anand Subramanian, who served as CEO, and Jay Sears, who joined in 2004 and was instrumental in building the exchange and media businesses from their inception.
Throughout its operation, ContextWeb secured significant venture capital funding, raising a total of $53.5 million from investors such as Draper Fisher Jurvetson Management, Gold Hill Capital, and Gotham Ventures. A notable funding event was a $9 million Series B round in 2005. The company's growth was marked by its expanding reach, hitting 143 million monthly unique visitors at one point. In a strategic move to create a more comprehensive digital technology platform, ContextWeb merged with Datran Media in September 2011 to form PulsePoint. This merger combined ContextWeb's expertise in contextual targeting and real-time bidding with Datran's audience measurement capabilities, aiming to offer a holistic platform for audience engagement and targeting.
