About Confluent Photonics

Confluent Photonics, founded in 2000 and headquartered in Salem, New Hampshire, specialized in providing optical transport solutions to the telecommunications and cable-television industries. The company focused on designing and manufacturing both passive and active Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) optical components. Its business model was centered on enabling cable-television system operators to significantly expand the capacity and bandwidth of their existing fiber-optic cable infrastructure without the need for laying new fiber.

The company's product portfolio was comprehensive, including strand-mounted DWDM node splitting units, Mux/Demux units, and broadcast/narrowcast splitter/combiners. Additionally, it offered rack-mountable passive DWDM Mux/Demux systems for various high-speed optical communication networks, such as long-haul, metropolitan, and hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) DWDM networks. Confluent Photonics also developed protection switch solutions and other passive optical modules like optical filters, splitters, and taps. A key element of its manufacturing process was the use of silicon-on-integration (SoI) fabrication techniques.

Throughout its operation, Confluent Photonics was venture-backed, securing a total of $14.3 million in funding. Notable investors included CIT Group, InnoCal Venture Capital, and Invesco. A significant milestone in its growth was the acquisition of Lightchip's Dense Wavelength Division in October 2002. After six years of operation, Confluent Photonics was acquired by Auxora Inc. on March 6, 2006. Following the acquisition, Confluent's CEO, Nicholas Economou, joined Auxora's board of directors, and its operations were consolidated with Auxora's facility in Shenzhen, China.
