In 1987, a company called Conductus was founded to develop and market electronic components based on high-temperature superconductors. Their primary focus was on the telecommunications and defense markets. The technology promised significant performance advantages over traditional copper-based electronics, including better sensitivity and efficiency in a smaller, lighter package. The company's work attracted several investors, including Alloy Ventures and ACI Capital. By the early 2000s, Conductus was a publicly traded company on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker CDTS. However, the company faced challenges, and in December 2002, it received a delisting notification from Nasdaq for failing to maintain the required minimum stock price and stockholders' equity. In a pivotal move, Conductus announced in October 2002 that it would merge with Superconductor Technologies Inc. (STI), another pioneer in the field. The deal involved Conductus shareholders receiving shares of STI, with the combined entity retaining the Superconductor Technologies name. The merger was finalized in December 2002, with Conductus becoming a subsidiary of STI. This strategic combination aimed to consolidate strengths, particularly in the wireless telecommunications market, and create a more robust force in the industry.
