Comstellar Technologies
Comstellar Technologies, a communications infrastructure organization focused on establishing, nurturing, and developing communications companies
About Comstellar Technologies
Based in Los Altos, California, Comstellar Technologies was established in 2000 as a communications infrastructure company. The firm operated with a distinct business model focused on founding, nurturing, and developing a portfolio of independent companies centered on communications technologies. This strategy was designed to merge the agility of a startup with the substantial resources of a larger organization, thereby accelerating the launch and improving the success rates of new ventures.
The founding management team included Chief Executive Officer Sanjiv Ahuja, the former president and chief operating officer of Telcordia Technologies. Raj Parekh, previously the vice president of engineering and chief technology officer at Sun Microsystems, served as the Chief Technology Officer and Chairman of the Board. The team also included Raj Singh, a founder of StratumOne Communications and Fiberlane.
Comstellar's core business was to identify promising concepts, both internally generated and from external entrepreneurs, and provide them with a comprehensive support system. This included financial and management resources, branding, infrastructure support, and assistance in developing industry relationships. The company's initial focus was on developing technologies to enhance optical-switching systems, improve wireless communications, and process digital signals efficiently. Through its venture arm, Redwood Venture Partners, Comstellar aimed to develop 12 to 15 companies annually while also making smaller investments in each. In July 2000, the company raised $135 million in a Series A funding round with investors such as Accel, Oak Investment Partners, and Goldman Sachs. The company is now listed as out of business.
