CompuPay
Payroll, tax filing and human resource-related service
About CompuPay
Founded in 1980 by Peter Roth, CompuPay carved out a niche by offering small businesses a straightforward way to manage payroll processing and tax payments. For decades, the company focused on this core service, providing solutions that included online payroll, software for in-house preparation, and specialized packages for industries like construction. This strategy established CompuPay as a significant player in the payroll services landscape for small-to-medium-sized businesses. A pivotal chapter began in 2004 when Willis Stein & Partners, a private equity firm, acquired a majority interest in the company, with founder Peter Roth remaining on the Board of Directors. This move was designed to accelerate growth through market expansion and strategic acquisitions. Leading the company through this phase was President Tom Heinzmann, who had joined in 1997. The company's journey culminated in a significant 2012 merger with BenefitMall, a large employee benefits provider. The deal, backed by an investor group led by Austin Ventures, created a combined entity aimed at offering integrated employee benefits and payroll. Following the merger, CompuPay's CEO, Charles Lathrop, became president of the new, larger company, which operated under the BenefitMall name. A year later, the CompuPay brand was officially retired, fully consolidating its services into BenefitMall's offerings.
