Comet Therapeutics
Comet Therapeutics is the leader in CoEnzyme A (CoA) science and intermediate metabolism
About Comet Therapeutics
Comet Therapeutics was a biopharmaceutical company focused on developing treatments for rare inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) by addressing dysregulated Coenzyme A (CoA) metabolism. Founded in the Netherlands in 2017 as TM3 Therapeutics, the company later relocated its headquarters to Cambridge, Massachusetts. One of the co-founders was Enej Kuscer, who served as the Chief Technology Officer and has over a decade of experience in CoA metabolism research. The executive team also included President and CEO David de Graaf, former CEO of Syntimmune, and Chief Scientific Officer Art Taveras, a veteran of Biogen.
The company's core asset was its proprietary CoEnzyme Metabolism (CoMET™) Platform. This technology was designed to restore fundamental cellular metabolism by delivering a stabilized CoA precursor and key metabolic intermediates to affected organ systems, including the liver, muscle, and brain. The CoMET™ platform's modular nature allowed it to target multiple groups of IMDs that share common metabolic pathways, independent of the specific genetic mutation. This approach aimed to overcome limitations of existing treatments for severe, life-threatening disorders such as methylmalonic acidemia (MMA) and propionic acidemia (PA).
Comet's business model revolved around the research and development of a pipeline of drug candidates derived from its CoMET™ platform, with the goal of commercializing treatments for these unmet medical needs. The company's focus was on conditions where metabolism and neurodegenerative diseases intersect, such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. After initial seed funding, the company raised $28.5 million in a Series A financing round in June 2019, co-led by Canaan and Sofinnova Partners, with participation from INKEF Capital and BioInnovation Capital. In August 2021, VectivBio Holding AG, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, announced its acquisition of Comet Therapeutics to expand its own rare disease pipeline. The deal, which was finalized in September 2021, involved an exchange of equity and cash, with the CoMET™ platform becoming a key asset for VectivBio.
