About Comergent Technologies

Comergent Technologies, established in 1998, carved a niche for itself as a provider of eBusiness software solutions tailored for large corporations. The company was co-founded by Jean Kovacs, who also served as its President and CEO. Kovacs brought a wealth of experience from the technology sector, having previously co-founded the Qualix Group which went public in 1997, and being an early employee at other successful tech companies like Sun Microsystems and Frame Technology. Her journey through the Silicon Valley ecosystem, combined with a Bachelor of Science in finance and an MBA from Harvard Business School, positioned her to lead Comergent in addressing complex enterprise needs.

The firm developed an enterprise suite of modular eBusiness applications designed to manage and streamline selling and order management processes with customers and partners. Comergent's software was built on a service-oriented architecture (SOA), which allowed clients the flexibility to incrementally adopt new capabilities as their business needs evolved. The product suite included a range of functionalities from account management and configuration to guided sales tools. The company primarily served clients in the high-tech, telecommunications, aerospace, life sciences, automotive, and retail sectors, counting Cisco Systems as its first customer and later adding names like Best Buy and DirecTV.

Comergent's business model revolved around providing these enterprise-scale e-commerce sales, order management, and fulfillment capabilities to its clients. A significant milestone in the company's history was its acquisition in November 2006 by Sterling Commerce, a subsidiary of AT&T, for approximately $155 million in cash. This acquisition was a strategic move to integrate Comergent's eBusiness Application Suite with Sterling Commerce's multi-channel order fulfillment software, aiming to offer a comprehensive, end-to-end solution for supply chain execution. Following subsequent acquisitions, the technology became known as IBM Sterling Multi-Channel Selling.
