Comat Technologies
Comat empowers rural citizens by creating local economies and giving them access to information and services
About Comat Technologies
Comat Technologies Private Limited was established in Bangalore, India, in 1996 by founder Sriram Raghavan. The company operated as a social enterprise focused on deploying information and communication technology (ICT) to deliver services in rural and semi-urban areas of India.
The core of Comat's business was providing e-governance solutions, acting as a bridge between governmental bodies and citizens. Its business model centered on establishing a network of Rural Business Centers, which served as kiosks for delivering a variety of services. These services included Government-to-Citizen (G2C) and Business-to-Consumer (B2C) offerings. For revenue, the company charged a fee per transaction, a portion of which was shared with the state government.
Among its significant achievements, Comat was involved in the digitization of over 20 million land records in Karnataka through the 'Bhoomi' project, directly benefiting millions of farmers. The company also executed 'Project Nemmadi', setting up telecenters to provide essential government services to rural populations. Services offered through its centers included the issuance of land records and various certificates, management of ration cards, electoral services, and access to financial and insurance services. At one point, the company was serving over 75,000 citizens daily through approximately 1,500 centers.
Throughout its operation, Comat secured significant funding to fuel its expansion across India. It raised a total of $22.7 million over three rounds from investors including Intel Capital, Avigo Capital Partners, Omidyar Network, and Elevar Equity. A major milestone in the company's history was its acquisition by Glodyne Technoserve, a Mumbai-based IT services firm, in June 2011. According to public records, the company is now under liquidation.
