Belgian family owned retail corporation that is managing the Colruyt supermarket retail stores
About Colruyt Group
The story of Colruyt Group begins not in a boardroom, but in a bakery. In 1928, Franz Colruyt started by supplying bread, coffee, and spices to local grocers. This humble wholesale business was the seed for what would become a dominant force in European retail. After the Second World War, the next generation, led by his son Jo Colruyt, saw an opportunity to change the game. In the 1960s, Jo introduced the discount supermarket model to Belgium, opening a store with a simple, powerful promise: prices 10% lower than the competition. This low-price, no-frills strategy became the company's DNA. Efficiency was everything. The company embraced technology early, using punch cards and 'full scanning' barcodes for stock management long before it was standard practice. This focus on cost-saving wasn't just a business model; it was a survival tactic that helped the company navigate intense competition that nearly led to bankruptcy in the 1980s. The company went public on the Euronext Brussels exchange, solidifying its financial position. When Jo Colruyt passed away unexpectedly in 1994, his son Jef Colruyt took the helm. Jef steered the company into a new era of growth and diversification. He expanded into France and launched new store concepts like the organic supermarket Bio-Planet, convenience store OKay, and non-food retailers like DreamLand. In 2023, after nearly three decades, Jef Colruyt transitioned from CEO to Chairman, handing over daily operations to Stefan Goethaert, the first non-family member to lead the company. Today, Colruyt Group is a diversified retail giant with over 33,000 employees, still driven by the founding principle of efficiency and value.
