Coiled offers a cloud-based platform designed to scale Python data science, machine learning, and AI workloads. Founded in 2020 by Matthew Rocklin, the creator of the open-source library Dask, along with Hugo Bowne-Anderson and Rami Chowdhury, Coiled's mission is to simplify distributed computing for data scientists. Rocklin, who serves as CEO, has a background in the numeric Python ecosystem, having developed Dask and worked at Anaconda and NVIDIA before starting Coiled. Bowne-Anderson has extensive experience in data science education and evangelism from his time at DataCamp and as a consultant.

The company's core product, Coiled Cloud, is a managed service built on Dask that allows data professionals to run their existing Python scripts on cloud infrastructure with minimal code changes. It handles the complexities of creating and managing distributed computing clusters, enabling users to process large datasets that exceed the memory of a single machine. The platform supports major cloud providers like AWS, GCP, and Azure, with compute resources running within the client's own cloud account to ensure data privacy and security. Coiled's business model involves a usage-based surcharge on top of the customer's cloud provider costs. The platform is designed for integration and can be used from various environments, including laptops, Jupyter notebooks, or other cloud services like AWS SageMaker.

Coiled secured a $5 million seed round in September 2020, co-led by Costanoa Ventures and IA Ventures. This was followed by a $21 million Series A round in May 2021, led by Bessemer Venture Partners, bringing the company's total funding to $26 million. The company serves a range of clients, from individual researchers to large enterprises like Capital One and Anthem Health, helping them reduce data processing times and infrastructure costs.
