Cognex
Companies around the world rely on Cognex machine vision and industrial ID to optimize quality, drive down manufacturing costs, and control traceability
About Cognex
In 1981, an MIT lecturer named Dr. Robert J. Shillman decided to leave academia, investing his life savings to start a company. He persuaded two of his graduate students, Bill Silver and Marilyn Matz, to join him for the summer by offering them free bicycles. That summer job turned into a career, and together they founded Cognex, a name derived from "Cognition Experts." The company's mission was to solve manufacturing problems by giving computers the ability to see. Their first product, DataMan, launched in 1982 and was the world's first industrial optical character recognition (OCR) system. Its initial application was for a typewriter manufacturer, where it inspected keys to ensure they were in the correct positions. This marked the beginning of machine vision, a field that uses technology to provide imaging-based automatic inspection and analysis for applications like quality control and robot guidance. After initially developing custom systems, Cognex shifted its focus to standardized machine vision products for equipment manufacturers, particularly in the growing semiconductor industry. This strategy proved successful, and the company became profitable for the first time in 1987. A major milestone followed in 1989 when Cognex went public on the NASDAQ. Today, Cognex technology is a crucial component in global manufacturing and logistics, from inspecting electronics to reading barcodes in distribution centers.
