Coffi Lab is an independently owned operator of dog-friendly coffee shops with locations across South Wales and England. The company was established in 2021 by James Shapland, a seasoned entrepreneur in the coffee industry who previously founded and expanded the Coffee#1 chain before selling it to SA Brains in 2011. Shapland, a former investment banker, re-entered the coffee market motivated by a desire to create premium, community-focused hubs in suburban and town locations, a niche he identified as underserved by major chains. The brand's concept was inspired by Shapland's Fox Red Labrador, Dylan, which is reflected in the name—'Coffi' is Welsh for coffee, and 'Lab' is a nod to Labradors. This theme underpins the company's core mission to provide welcoming spaces for coffee lovers and their dogs, fostering a sense of community. The business model operates on a leasehold basis for its properties and targets a diverse clientele, including dog walkers, families, and remote workers, by creating inviting atmospheres in leafy neighbourhoods. To ensure quality and consistency, Coffi Lab has invested in its own infrastructure, including a central kitchen, bakery, and a coffee roastery in Cardiff, which allows for control over its supply chain and the development of seasonal menus and proprietary coffee blends like the 'Silver Lab'. Financially, Coffi Lab has demonstrated significant growth, ranking as Wales's second fastest-growing SME in 2024. The expansion is supported by a £1.7 million investment from the Development Bank of Wales, aimed at accelerating the opening of new locations. The company also has a strong social mission, partnering with the Guide Dogs UK charity and donating the first day's gross revenue from every new shop opening, having raised over £110,000 to date.
