Clovis Oncology
Biopharmaceutical company focused on acquiring, developing and commercializing anti-cancer agents.
About Clovis Oncology
Clovis Oncology was a commercial-stage biotechnology firm established in April 2009 with a focus on developing and marketing cancer treatments for markets in the United States and Europe. The company was co-founded by Patrick J. Mahaffy, who also served as its President and CEO. Mahaffy brought extensive experience to the venture, having previously founded and led Pharmion Corporation, an oncology-focused company acquired by Celgene in 2008, and served as CEO of NeXstar Pharmaceuticals, which was acquired by Gilead Sciences. His career began in venture capital at Warburg Pincus after earning degrees in International Affairs from Lewis & Clark College and Columbia University.
The company's business model centered on precision medicine, aiming to deliver specific drugs to targeted patient populations. This strategy involved the simultaneous development of diagnostic tools, in partnership with other firms, to identify patients most likely to respond to their therapies. Clovis Oncology was publicly traded on the NASDAQ exchange under the symbol CLVS. A significant product in its portfolio was Rubraca (rucaparib), a PARP inhibitor granted accelerated FDA approval in December 2016 for treating advanced ovarian cancer in patients with certain BRCA mutations who had undergone two or more chemotherapies. The company also had other drug candidates in its pipeline, including rociletinib for non-small cell lung cancer and FAP-2286, an experimental peptide-targeted radionuclide therapy.
Despite achieving regulatory milestones, Clovis Oncology faced significant financial challenges and never reached profitability since its inception. Commercial sales of Rubraca did not generate sufficient revenue to sustain operations, competing against more successful PARP inhibitors. The company also faced regulatory setbacks, including increased FDA scrutiny on the PARP inhibitor class and a $20 million settlement with the SEC in 2018 over claims of exaggerating the efficacy of a drug candidate to investors. These pressures culminated in the company filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2022. As part of the bankruptcy proceedings, Clovis sold its assets. The rights to its pipeline candidate FAP-2286 were sold to Novartis in a deal involving a $50 million upfront payment and potential future milestone payments. In April 2023, the rights to Rubraca were sold at auction to the Austrian company Pharma& Schweiz GmbH for $70 million upfront, plus potential future milestone payments. The Chapter 11 cases were officially closed in October 2024.
