About CloudPayments
CloudPayments is a Russian payment processing company that provides online acquiring services for e-commerce and other digital businesses. The firm enables merchants to accept payments through a wide variety of channels, including websites, mobile applications, social networks, and messengers, supporting integrations with Apple Pay and Google Pay. It also facilitates international acquiring, with the capability to process transactions in 30 different currencies. A key feature of its service is an integrated payment form that allows customers to pay without being redirected to a third-party gateway, aiming for a seamless checkout experience.
The company was founded on April 13, 2014, by Dmitry Spiridonov and Konstantin Yan. Both founders had prior experience in the fintech sector, having met while working at the payment service RBK.Money, where Yan was the IT director and Spiridonov was the commercial director. Their shared background in payment services informed their goal to create a more technologically advanced and user-friendly tool for online payment integration. The startup reached self-sufficiency by September 2014, just a few months after its launch.
CloudPayments operates on a commission-based business model, charging its clients a percentage for each transaction processed. The starting commission rate is 3.9%, with the final rate set individually for each partner. The company serves a diverse client base, ranging from small and medium-sized enterprises to large corporations, with a significant portion of its revenue in 2019 generated by medium-sized businesses, fast-food enterprises, and educational service providers. In February 2022, the company rebranded its various business lines—including CloudPayments, CloudKassir (an online cash register service), CloudTips (for cashless tipping), and CloudSoft (a SaaS solution)—under the unified umbrella brand, Cloud.
The company's growth trajectory attracted significant investor attention, culminating in a phased acquisition by Tinkoff Group. In October 2017, Tinkoff acquired a 55% stake. This was followed by further acquisitions, and by August 2019, Tinkoff held a 95% share after buying out co-founder Konstantin Yan's stake. The complete acquisition was finalized in January 2023, when Tinkoff became the sole owner of CloudPayments.
