About CloudMine

CloudMine, established in 2011 by Brendan McCorkle and partners, initially emerged from a business modeling class at the University of Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia-based company began as a mobile Backend-as-a-Service (mBaaS) provider, offering a suite of tools like object storage, push notifications, and analytics to help enterprises develop and operate mobile applications without building their own backend infrastructure.

Observing significant traction within highly regulated industries, CloudMine strategically pivoted to specialize in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. This led to the creation of its flagship product, the Connected Health Cloud, a HIPAA-compliant platform designed to accelerate the development of secure digital health applications. The platform enabled healthcare organizations to integrate disparate data sources, including Electronic Health Records (EHRs), medical devices, and wearables, into a single, secure environment. This empowered clients like the American Heart Association and Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals to build applications for patient engagement, clinical workflows, and data operationalization while maintaining stringent security and regulatory compliance.

The company's business model was centered on providing this platform as a service to enterprises, reducing their internal development complexity and ensuring compliance with standards like HIPAA and HITECH. CloudMine secured significant venture capital, including a $5 million Series A round in 2015 led by Safeguard Scientifics, to expand its product development, sales, and engineering teams. Despite being recognized as a leader in the Enterprise Health Cloud market by Forrester Research in 2017, the company faced financial difficulties. After defaulting on a loan and failing to secure further funding, CloudMine filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and ceased operations in November 2018.
