About Clash

Clash App, Inc., which eventually rebranded as Huddles, operated as a video-sharing and creator monetization platform targeting the creator economy. The company was co-founded by Brendon McNerney, a former creator on the short-form video app Vine, and PJ Leimgruber. McNerney's journey as a Vine creator, where he amassed over 700,000 followers, directly informed the company's mission. He experienced firsthand the difficulties creators faced in monetizing their content, which became the primary problem Clash aimed to solve.

The venture began as Clash, soft-launching in the summer of 2020 and gaining significant traction amid rumors of a TikTok ban in the U.S. A pivotal moment in the company's history was its acquisition of Byte, an app often considered the successor to Vine, in early 2021. This merger combined Byte's video creation tools with Clash's monetization features, relaunching as Clash in October 2021. The platform's core function was to allow content creators to earn money directly from their fanbase, irrespective of follower count. This was facilitated through features like "Drops," a virtual tipping mechanism where fans could send in-app digital goods that creators could redeem for cash. Later, the business model shifted to prioritize monthly subscriptions for exclusive content and fan engagement.

The platform's main offering evolved over time. Initially a short-form video app, it later pivoted to focus on a feature called "Huddles," which were public and private group chats designed for creators to engage more directly with their most loyal fans. This led to a full rebranding from Clash to Huddles. The company's revenue was generated by taking a percentage of the fan purchases, such as tips and subscriptions. Throughout its journey, the company secured venture funding from backers including Alexis Ohanian's firm Seven Seven Six. In March 2023, it was announced that Huddles, under its parent company Clash App, Inc., was being acquired by an unnamed larger creator company, and the standalone service was discontinued in May 2023.
