Provider of technology and solutions for media content MoreLess
Civolution emerged in October 2008 as a corporate spin-off from Royal Philips Electronics, originating from digital watermarking research that began in Philips' labs in 1996. Spearheaded by Alex Terpstra and four colleagues, the venture was established as a stand-alone company with backing from the venture capital firm Prime Ventures. The company quickly consolidated its market position by acquiring the software and technology solutions business, including the NexGuard brand, from Thomson in July 2009.
The firm specialized in digital watermarking and fingerprinting technologies, creating solutions to identify, manage, and monetize media content for clients across the media and entertainment industry. Its business was structured around providing content protection and intelligence through two primary technologies: forensic watermarking, which embeds imperceptible identifiers in media to trace leaks, and automatic content recognition (ACR) via fingerprinting, which identifies content by analyzing its audio and video patterns. This technology served major clients like broadcasters, film studios, and advertisers, including Red Bull, ABC, and the BBC, for applications ranging from anti-piracy to audience measurement.
Civolution's product portfolio was organized into distinct business units. The Teletrax service offered a global broadcast monitoring network for TV analytics and synchronized advertising. The SyncNow product enabled second-screen synchronization for interactive viewing experiences. The NexGuard solution provided forensic watermarking to protect high-value content like pre-release films, digital cinema, and streaming media from unauthorized distribution. This comprehensive suite of tools allowed content owners to track media usage, measure campaign reach, and deter piracy.
Starting in 2013, Civolution's management pursued a strategic decision to sell its main business units separately to buyers who could best foster their individual growth. This led to a series of strategic acquisitions over two years. In December 2014, the audience measurement and SyncNow audio watermarking business was sold to Kantar Media, a WPP company. Subsequently, in July 2015, the Teletrax TV analytics and ad-syncing division was acquired by the US data science firm 4C Insights. The final chapter for Civolution concluded in July 2016 with the sale of its NexGuard forensic watermarking business to the Kudelski Group. Following these divestitures, the Civolution entity was effectively dissolved, having successfully spun off and sold its core technology assets. The company's contributions to the industry were recognized with two Technology & Engineering Emmy® Awards, one in 2016 for its steganographic technologies and another in 2018 for its video identification technology.
