About Civicon

In 1975, brothers Horace and David Horsey were farmers in Kenya. When a cement factory was being built in Mombasa, they found an unexpected opportunity. The German engineers on site struggled to communicate with the local workforce, and the Horsey brothers, fluent in English, became the bridge. What began as a communication link quickly became a hands-on education in construction, growing a five-man team into a sixty-person operation. This was the beginning of Civicon. With no formal engineering training, the brothers built their company on practical experience, learning on the job. The company expanded from general construction into more specialized and challenging projects. They ventured into logistics, helping to transport food aid into Ethiopia in 1985, and developed an expertise in building in remote and difficult environments across East and Central Africa. Their work came to encompass roads, bridges, and critical infrastructure for the oil and gas, power, and mining industries. A significant chapter in Civicon's story came in 2011 when Trans-Century Limited, a Nairobi Securities Exchange-listed infrastructure investment firm, announced it was acquiring a controlling stake in the company. This move integrated Civicon into a larger, publicly traded group, providing more capital and expanding its reach. Today, Civicon operates as a key engineering and construction subsidiary of Trans-Century, tackling complex projects from Kenya to the DRC.
