About Chroma Therapeutics

Chroma Therapeutics Limited was a UK-based biotechnology firm established around 2000-2001, which has since ceased operations. The company concentrated on the discovery and development of novel small-molecule drugs aimed at treating high-prevalence cancers and inflammatory disorders. Its therapeutic strategy was centered on chromatin biology and proprietary cell accumulation technologies designed to target macrophages.

The company's pipeline included Tosedostat (CHR-2797), an oral aminopeptidase inhibitor for leukemia, which it advanced to late-stage clinical studies. Another key program was a macrophage-targeted HDAC inhibitor for cancer, known as CHR-2845. Over its lifespan, Chroma Therapeutics secured significant venture capital backing from prominent investors including Abingworth Management, Gilde Healthcare, The Wellcome Trust, and Nomura Phase4 Ventures. A notable milestone was a 2009 Series D financing round of £15 million, which included a strategic investment from GlaxoSmithKline linked to a collaboration on Chroma's technology platform.

The firm was led by experienced executives from the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors. Ian Nicholson, who has a background in physiology and business, served as CEO from 2004 until 2012, having previously been a Senior Vice President at Celltech. Richard Bungay, a chartered accountant with experience at Celltech and AstraZeneca, held the role of CFO and later took over as CEO in 2012. Despite its clinical progress and strategic partnerships, Chroma Therapeutics ultimately navigated a challenging investment climate, leading to the sale of its assets and closure through a members' voluntary liquidation process around 2012-2014.
