ChargeLab
Builds OCPP-compliant software for managing EV charging stations
About ChargeLab
ChargeLab operates as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) company, providing a hardware-agnostic operating system for electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. The company does not build its own hardware but instead focuses on a software platform that can manage and optimize charging stations from various manufacturers. This approach allows clients to connect any charger that complies with the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP), offering flexibility in hardware selection. The business generates revenue by charging a subscription fee for its management software. Its target clients include fleets, building operators, convenience stores, utilities, and other businesses that manage commercial EV chargers.
The company was founded in Toronto, Canada by CEO Zak Lefevre, who started exploring the EV space in 2015 and officially launched the company in 2016. Lefevre, who has a background in computer science and finance from McGill University, was driven by the conviction that EVs would eventually dominate the automotive market. Initially, the company resold and installed charging equipment before pivoting to focus on software. In 2020, Ehsan Mokhtari joined as a co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, bringing his experience from a cybersecurity company he had previously built and sold. This new partnership led to ChargeLab securing its first venture capital financing and accelerating the development of its core software platform. The company has since raised over $30 million in funding from investors including King River Capital, ABB E-Mobility, Eaton, and Silver Comet.
ChargeLab's core product is a cloud-based charging station management system (CSMS). This platform provides a comprehensive suite of tools for managing charging networks at scale. Key features include automated monitoring of charger status, remote management of pricing and access rules, payment processing, and electrical load balancing to optimize energy consumption. The company also offers a mobile app for EV drivers to locate stations and pay for charging sessions. A key selling point is its API-first architecture, which makes the platform modular and scalable for integration with third-party systems. Recently, ChargeLab introduced Spark, a suite of AI-powered tools designed to proactively monitor and diagnose issues with EV chargers, reducing downtime.
