About ChaCha

ChaCha Search Inc. was a human-guided search engine that provided real-time answers to user queries through its website and mobile applications. Founded in Carmel, Indiana, in 2006 by serial entrepreneur Scott A. Jones and business partner Brad Bostic, the company aimed to add a human touch to internet search, which was dominated by algorithmic engines. The name "ChaCha" is derived from the Mandarin Chinese word for "to search" (查, chá).

Scott A. Jones, a veteran entrepreneur, was previously known for inventing the voicemail system used by billions and for founding Gracenote, the music metadata company acquired by Sony. Brad Bostic, who served as President, brought experience in leading high-tech startups. His personal experience with his mother's illness later inspired him to found hc1, a healthcare technology company, demonstrating a long-standing interest in using technology to solve complex problems.

ChaCha's core service allowed users to ask questions via its website, a toll-free number, or by sending an SMS to the shortcode 242-242. These queries were routed to a network of freelance "guides" who would find and provide answers. Initially, the service featured a web-based chat with a guide, but the company later pivoted to focus on its mobile SMS and voice search products. The business model was entirely ad-supported, generating revenue by displaying advertisements alongside answers stored in its knowledge base and through mobile marketing campaigns with major brands like Coca-Cola and McDonald's. The service was free for users.

The company attracted significant investment, raising over $85 million from notable backers including Jeff Bezos's firm, Bezos Expeditions, Rho Ventures, and Qualcomm Ventures. At its peak around 2012, ChaCha handled millions of questions daily and reached tens of millions of monthly users. However, the business model proved unsustainable. The high operational costs of paying a vast network of human guides, coupled with a heavy reliance on advertising revenue, created financial instability. The company's market position was further eroded by increased competition from the rapidly advancing algorithms of search giants like Google, whose Panda update in 2011 negatively impacted ChaCha's search rankings. After struggling with declining revenue and the inability to service its debt, ChaCha shut down operations on December 12, 2016.
