Welcome back to the show. Today, we're talking about a company born from a classic founder story: a problem a surgeon couldn't solve in the operating room. Ceterix Orthopaedics was built to change the way surgeons treat meniscus tears, a common knee injury that often leads to the removal of the cartilage, increasing the risk of future arthritis. The company’s goal was to make repairing the meniscus, rather than removing it, the standard of care. The story starts with Dr. Justin Saliman, an orthopedic surgeon who grew frustrated with the limitations of existing surgical tools. He saw that many complex meniscus tears were considered irreparable simply because surgeons couldn't physically stitch them up in the tight confines of the knee joint. Driven by the idea that he could have a greater impact by creating a solution than by treating individual patients, he founded Ceterix in 2010. The company’s key innovation was the NovoStitch Pro, a device that allows surgeons to place stitches arthroscopically to repair complex tear patterns that were previously impossible to treat. This wasn't an easy road; it involved years of refining prototypes to create a tool that was effective and could be manufactured at scale. Ceterix raised significant venture capital, with PitchBook reporting a total of $116 million in funding from investors like 5AM Ventures, Novo Holdings, and Versant Ventures. The major turning point came in January 2019, when the global medical technology giant Smith & Nephew acquired Ceterix for an initial payment of $50 million, with up to an additional $55 million based on performance. The acquisition was a strategic move for Smith & Nephew, adding Ceterix's innovative technology to its own sports medicine portfolio. Today, the NovoStitch technology is part of Smith & Nephew's offerings, reaching a global network of surgeons and fulfilling Saliman's original vision of preserving the meniscus and changing the standard of care for knee injuries.
