Certuma
FDA-regulated generative AI for medical diagnosis and prescriptions
About Certuma
Certuma.ai is developing what it aims to be the world's first FDA-approved autonomous AI doctor, designed to address the global shortage of physicians by scaling medical expertise through software. The company recently launched out of stealth with $10 million in funding from 8VC. The venture was founded by Martin Varsavsky, a serial entrepreneur with experience in building and scaling technology and FDA-regulated medical technology companies.
Certuma's core technology is its proprietary Hybrid Deterministic Architecture. This system combines the reasoning capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) with a hardcoded verification layer to eliminate the risk of "clinical hallucinations" or inaccurate AI-generated medical advice. This approach ensures that the AI operates within explicit, auditable boundaries, converting patient-described symptoms in natural language into structured clinical data for physician review. The process involves conversational intake, structuring of clinical details, running safety checks, and queueing for sign-off by a licensed physician.
The company's first operational product, Fast.Doctor, serves as a validation of its technology and has reportedly treated over 10,000 patients in South America. Certuma is initially targeting approximately 25 common medical conditions, such as urinary tract infections and sore throats, that are characterized by low medical risk and well-defined treatment protocols. The goal is for the AI to handle both diagnosis and basic treatment for these common ailments, allowing human physicians to focus on more complex cases. While the initial phase involves a licensed physician reviewing every AI-generated decision, the long-term vision is for the AI to operate with increasing autonomy.
The founding team includes operators, clinicians, and AI engineers. Dr. Armando Cuesta, the Chief Medical Officer, is a physician-executive focused on clinical quality and evidence-based pathways. Other key personnel include individuals with backgrounds in scaling healthtech operations, computational linguistics, and legal and regulatory governance in healthcare technology.
