About CENTRE

CENTRE Consortium was established in 2018 as a collaborative venture between financial technology firm Circle and cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. The initiative was founded by the leaders of these two companies, Jeremy Allaire and Sean Neville from Circle, and Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam from Coinbase. Allaire, a serial entrepreneur with a background in developing web application platforms, and Neville architected the vision for CENTRE. Armstrong and Ehrsam brought deep expertise from the cryptocurrency exchange sector. The consortium was created to establish a governance framework and technical standards for fiat-backed stablecoins, aiming to facilitate the use of digital currencies for global payments and financial services.

The primary product governed by CENTRE was USD Coin (USDC), a stablecoin pegged 1:1 to the U.S. dollar. Circle and Coinbase were the first commercial issuers of USDC. The business model revolved around creating a network for the issuance, transfer, and redemption of price-stable crypto assets. This infrastructure was designed to serve a broad range of clients, from individuals and merchants to financial institutions, by enabling fast, low-cost, and transparent transactions on public blockchains. Revenue was generated from interest earned on the U.S. dollar reserves backing the USDC in circulation, which was shared between Circle and Coinbase.

USDC is a fully-reserved digital dollar, meaning every token is backed by a corresponding U.S. dollar or cash-equivalent asset held in reserves. These reserves are managed by Circle and are subject to regular attestations to ensure transparency and trust. The stablecoin operates across multiple blockchain networks, allowing for efficient, near-instantaneous cross-border payments at a fraction of the cost of traditional financial systems. This functionality positions USDC as a crucial piece of infrastructure within the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem and for businesses seeking to leverage blockchain for global commerce.

In August 2023, a significant milestone occurred when Circle and Coinbase announced the dissolution of the CENTRE Consortium as a standalone entity. Citing increasing regulatory clarity for stablecoins, the two companies decided to streamline operations by bringing all governance and operational responsibilities for USDC in-house at Circle. As part of this new arrangement, Coinbase acquired an equity stake in Circle, and Circle acquired Coinbase's 50% interest in the consortium. This transition solidified Circle as the sole issuer and governing body of USDC, while maintaining the strategic and economic alignment between the two founding companies.
