About Celtro
Founded in Dresden, Germany, on November 18, 2019, Celtro GmbH is a medical technology company focused on creating autonomous medical implants that are powered by the body itself. The company was established by a team combining expertise from the semiconductor and medical fields, including Dr.-Ing. Gerd Teepe, a 30-year veteran of the semiconductor industry, alongside finance leader Jarek Budny, and clinical advisors Dr. med. Thomas Gaspar and Dr. med. Judith Piorkowski. Read full description
Celtro's business centers on the development and commercialization of medical devices that harvest electrical energy directly from living biological cells, thereby eliminating the need for batteries. This approach aims to solve significant issues associated with current implantable electronics, such as limited battery life, the necessity for replacement surgeries, and the physical constraints and risks of leads and wires. The company's revenue model will be based on the sale of these advanced medical products. The core of its intellectual property is a portfolio of patents related to nanowatt electronics and the principle of collecting nano-watt range energy from the action potential cycle of living cells.
The company's first product under development is a leadless, battery-free pacemaker. This device will use a proprietary semiconductor chip, the "NanoPower-BioChip," designed to operate in the nano-watt range, powered by the surrounding cardiac tissue. To achieve the miniaturized and complex form factor required for catheter-based deployment, Celtro has partnered with Nano Dimension, utilizing their Additively Manufactured Electronics (AME) technology for rapid prototyping and production. Following a successful seed financing round in December 2021, supported by private investors and the state of Saxony, the company is advancing its proof-of-concept and moving towards the certification phase.
