About Celleration

Celleration, Inc. was a privately held medical device company founded in 1999 and based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. The company focused on developing and marketing proprietary low-frequency, non-contact ultrasound technology to accelerate the healing of acute and chronic wounds.

The core of Celleration's business was the MIST Therapy® System, which delivers therapeutic ultrasound through a saline mist to the wound bed. This non-contact method stimulates cells within and below the wound to promote healing, reduce inflammation, and decrease bioburden. The company received its first 510(k) clearance from the FDA in 2005, which allowed it to market the MIST Therapy System with the claim of promoting wound healing. In August 2014, the company received FDA clearance for its next-generation device, the UltraMIST™ System, which featured a smaller and more user-friendly design.

The company's business model revolved around the sale of these medical devices to hospitals and wound care centers. By 2014, MIST Therapy had been used in over 1.2 million treatments on more than 85,000 patients in the U.S. and the U.K. Celleration's revenue was approximately $8.7 million for its fiscal year ending in December 2014.

Over its history, Celleration raised significant capital from investors, including a $70.6 million total over seven rounds. In June 2015, Celleration was acquired by Alliqua BioMedical, Inc., a provider of advanced wound care products, for an initial price of approximately $30.4 million in cash and stock. The acquisition was intended to build a broader portfolio of wound care technologies for Alliqua. Following the acquisition, the UltraMIST System assets were later acquired by Sanuwave in August 2020.
