About Catalyst Pharmaceuticals
Catalyst Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (NASDAQ: CPRX) is a commercial-stage biopharmaceutical firm focused on the rare disease sector. Founded in January 2002 by Patrick J. McEnany and Hubert E. Huckel, the company operates with a clear business model: in-licensing, developing, and commercializing therapies for underserved patient populations with debilitating neurological and neuromuscular conditions. Revenue is generated primarily through the sale of its portfolio of approved drugs, distributed via specialty pharmacies. The company maintains a strong financial position, reporting total revenues of $146.6 million for the second quarter of 2025 and holding $652.8 million in cash with no funded debt at the end of that period.
Co-founder Patrick J. McEnany's journey into the pharmaceutical industry began unexpectedly when, as an investment banker, he took over the management of a struggling generic-drug maker, Royce Laboratories, in 1990. He successfully built up the company before its sale, gaining deep industry knowledge that he later applied to found Catalyst. Recognizing the opportunity in orphan drugs, he steered Catalyst to focus on treatments for rare diseases. After serving as CEO for over two decades, McEnany retired from the role at the end of 2023 and now serves as the Non-Executive Chairman of the Board. The current President and CEO is Richard J. Daly.
The company's commercial portfolio is led by FIRDAPSE® (amifampridine), its flagship product launched in 2019. It is the first FDA-approved treatment for Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LEMS), a rare autoimmune disorder affecting approximately 1 in 100,000 people in the U.S. The FDA first approved Firdapse for adults in November 2018 and later expanded the indication to include pediatric patients aged six and older in September 2022. Catalyst has strategically expanded its product line through acquisitions. In January 2023, it acquired the U.S. rights for FYCOMPA® (perampanel), an approved treatment for epilepsy. Later that year, in July 2023, the company acquired the North American rights to AGAMREE® (vamorolone) from Santhera Pharmaceuticals. AGAMREE, a novel corticosteroid for treating Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), received FDA approval in October 2023 and was commercially launched in the U.S. in March 2024. This strategic diversification has created a multi-product revenue stream, with FIRDAPSE, AGAMREE, and FYCOMPA forming the core of its commercial operations.
