Founded in 2003 by Jerry Guo and Lucy Xie, Casa Systems established itself as a provider of network solutions for cable, mobile, and fixed broadband service providers. Guo, who served as President and CEO, brought extensive telecommunications experience to the venture, having previously been the Vice President of Broadband at River Delta Networks and a research scientist at Bell Laboratories. The company’s initial strategy focused on developing high-efficiency cable modem termination systems (CMTS) to address the growing demand for bandwidth, launching its C100G CMTS platform in 2006. Casa Systems provided physical, virtualized, and cloud-native infrastructure for telecommunications networks. Its primary client base consisted of Tier 1 and regional service providers, including major names like Verizon, AT&T, and Charter Communications, spanning over 70 countries. The company’s business model was centered on selling specialized hardware and software-centric solutions. The core product, the Axyom Software Platform, offered a suite of cloud-native microservices for routing, subscriber management, and security across virtualized network functions, designed to facilitate the transition to 5G. A significant milestone was a $40 million equity investment from Verizon in 2022, which gave the telecom giant a 9.9% stake and aimed to leverage Casa's technology for its 5G core network and mobile edge computing services. Facing a significant decline in revenue and profits attributed to a downturn in capital investment from the cable and telco markets, coupled with the heavy investment required for its 5G product development, the company's debt became unsustainable. In April 2024, Casa Systems filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection to facilitate a court-supervised sale of its assets. As part of the proceedings, the company entered into an asset purchase agreement with Lumine Group for its 5G Mobile Core and RAN businesses and a stalking-horse agreement with Vecima Networks to sell its cable business for $20 million. The company went out of business following a Chapter 7 liquidation filing on June 7, 2024.
