Carbon Clean, founded in 2009 by Aniruddha Sharma and Prateek Bumb, develops cost-effective carbon capture technology for 'hard-to-abate' industries like cement, steel, refineries, and energy-from-waste. The company originated from a project at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, where Sharma was studying statistics and Bumb was studying engineering. Sharma's interest was influenced by witnessing the industrial pollution in India, including the aftermath of the 1984 Bhopal Gas Tragedy, while Bumb was motivated by the impacts of climate change he observed in his hometown of Jaipur.

Headquartered in London, the company established itself in the UK after receiving a government grant in 2012. Carbon Clean operates on a business-to-business (B2B) model, providing its technology and services directly to industrial clients. Its business offerings include technology licensing, solvent supply, process design packages, and end-to-end system implementation, including design, build, financing, and operation. Revenue is generated through these direct sales and partnerships with major industrial players.

The company's core technology has evolved from a patented solvent-based process using an amine-promoted buffer salt formulation to a modular and scalable system. Its flagship product, CycloneCC, utilizes rotating packed bed (RPB) technology, which enhances CO2 absorption through centrifugal force. This allows the system to be up to 50% cheaper and 10 times smaller than conventional carbon capture units, addressing key industry barriers of cost and physical space. The technology can capture over 90% of CO2 emissions from industrial sources. Carbon Clean has formed strategic partnerships with companies such as Chevron, CEMEX, Aramco, Samsung, and Tata Steel to deploy its solutions globally.
