Carbeau

Carbeau is a technology company spun out from Avantium, to commercialize an electrochemical platform that converts carbon dioxide into high-value, sustainable products. Headquartered at the Amsterdam Science Park in the Netherlands, the company utilizes its technology, formerly known as Volta Technology, to transform CO₂ from a waste stream into a raw material for chemical building blocks. This process uses electricity, preferably from renewable sources, to drive chemical reactions, enabling the production of cost-competitive chemicals and materials with low to negative carbon emissions. The company secured a total of €35.2 million in its initial funding round. This financing consists of €23.7 million in cash from an investor consortium and a €11.5 million in-kind contribution from Avantium, which retains a 32.7% stake in Carbeau. The consortium includes strategic partners GKT GmbH for industrial process technology expertise and Al Baleed Petrochemical for petrochemical and market knowledge, alongside financial partners Invest-NL and the Investment and Development Agency for the Northern Netherlands (NOM). Carbeau's initial focus is on producing glycolic acid for the personal care and cosmetics market, as well as polyglycolic acid (PLGA), a compostable plastic, positioning these products to compete with fossil-based alternatives. To advance its technology, the company is planning to develop a pilot plant in Delfzijl, a region chosen for its strong industrial base and infrastructure for Carbon Capture & Utilization (CCU).
