About Captain T Cell

Captain T Cell GmbH is a German biotechnology company focused on creating T-cell receptor (TCR) based therapies for solid tumors that are not adequately addressed by current treatments. Founded in 2020 as a spin-off from the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC), the company leverages years of foundational research from the institute. The scientific groundwork was laid by a team of immuno-oncology experts, including CEO Dr. Felix Lorenz, who has been leading the project since its early stages within the MDC. The concept won the OneStart competition in 2016 and received significant pre-seed support through the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research's (BMBF) GO-Bio program, which was awarded in 2018.

The company's core business revolves around the development of next-generation T-cell therapies. Its business model is centered on advancing its proprietary therapeutic candidates through preclinical and clinical trials to eventually achieve regulatory approval and commercialization. A significant milestone was achieved in May 2024, when Captain T Cell secured €8.5 million in a seed financing round from a syndicate of investors including i&i Biotech Fund, Brandenburg Kapital, and HIL-INVENT. This funding is allocated to moving its lead programs toward clinical trials and further developing its platform technologies.

Captain T Cell's technology features two primary platforms. The first is focused on creating efficacy-enhanced autologous TCR-T cells, which are engineered to have greater persistence and resilience within the hostile microenvironment of solid tumors. Its lead autologous candidate, CTC 127, is expected to enter first-in-human clinical studies in 2027. The second, its proprietary TCR-ALLO platform, is designed to produce allogeneic, or 'off-the-shelf', treatments. This allogeneic approach aims to provide more accessible and potentially lower-cost therapies applicable to a wider range of cancer indications. In June 2025, the company announced its residency in the Bayer Co.Lab incubator in Berlin to further accelerate its programs.
