About Capiter

Capiter was a Cairo-based B2B e-commerce marketplace founded in 2019 by brothers Mahmoud and Ahmed Nouh. Mahmoud Nouh previously co-founded the Egyptian mobility startup Swvl, where he served as COO. His experience at Swvl provided foundational knowledge that he applied to building Capiter. Ahmed Nouh brought experience from Mastercard, where he worked on ecosystem strategy for global emerging markets, focusing on financial accessibility and digital adoption.

The company developed a platform to streamline the procurement process for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It served a wide range of clients, including mom-and-pop stores, restaurants, cafes, electronic shops, and hotels. The business model combined an e-commerce marketplace with financial services, allowing merchants to order inventory, arrange delivery, and access buy-now-pay-later (BNPL) financing options through a single application. For suppliers and manufacturers, the platform offered insights into market data to help refine distribution strategies. Revenue was likely generated through fees or interest on the financing provided to small businesses.

Capiter's mobile application featured over 6,000 SKUs from more than 1,000 sellers. A key feature was its machine learning model, designed to help merchants predict which inventory items to purchase next. The company's primary milestone was raising $33 million in a Series A funding round in September 2021, co-led by Quona Capital and MSA Capital. At its peak, the platform served over 50,000 merchants. However, the company collapsed in late 2022. Reports emerged of financial difficulties, layoffs, and unpaid salaries starting around June 2022. In September 2022, the board of directors fired the Nouh brothers, citing a failure to fulfill their fiduciary duties amid allegations of financial mismanagement, which the founders denied. The company ultimately ceased trading, leaving behind significant debts.
