Policy control and application assurance technology
About Camiant
Camiant, Inc. provided policy control and application assurance technology for broadband service providers. Founded in 2003 by Susie Kim Riley and initially known as Chameleon Solutions, Inc., the company was based in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Camiant developed software that gave network operators real-time intelligence and control over their networks, enabling them to manage bandwidth and integrate new applications.
The company's core product was its Multimedia Policy Engine, which allowed for dynamic management of network resources. This technology enabled features like a 'soft cap' on bandwidth, where a user's speed could be reduced during peak congestion times rather than cutting off service, while also offering an upgrade path for customers wanting to pay for higher speeds. This addressed a key need for broadband operators managing network traffic and aiming to monetize their infrastructure. The company served major fixed and mobile broadband clients, including Comcast, Cox Communications, Verizon, Vodafone, and Sprint.
Camiant secured a total of $24.1 million in funding over three rounds from investors including Matrix, North Bridge Venture Partners, and Pilot House Ventures. On May 6, 2010, the company was acquired by Tekelec, a provider of mobile data management solutions, for approximately $130 million in cash. The acquisition was part of Tekelec's strategy to build a comprehensive portfolio for managing next-generation all-IP networks like LTE and IMS. Camiant, along with Tekelec itself, was later acquired by Oracle in 2013.
