In 1989, a company was founded in Canada with a straightforward name: Canadian Systems Development Company, or CSDC. For three decades, it operated as a classic gov-tech firm, providing software to help the public sector manage critical functions. Its core product, the Amanda platform, became a trusted tool for governments to handle regulatory services like permitting, licensing, and compliance. A significant turning point came in early 2017 when the Austin, Texas-based private equity firm BuildGroup acquired CSDC. This event triggered a major transformation. The company relocated to Austin and brought in new leadership, including CEO Erin Nelson, to shift from a professional services model to being a pure software company. Reflecting this new direction, CSDC rebranded in October 2019, becoming Calytera, a name derived from the Greek word for "better." The company continued to enhance its Amanda platform, which helps government agencies digitize and automate essential operations. In April 2020, Zeynep Young took the helm as CEO to accelerate growth. The final chapter of its independent journey was written in October 2020, when gov-tech leader Granicus acquired Calytera. The acquisition aimed to combine Calytera's deep experience in permitting and licensing with Granicus's extensive citizen engagement platform, marking the end of one era and the beginning of another for the long-standing company.
