About Calient AI

CALIENT Technologies — now operating under the brand Calient.AI — is a US-based designer and manufacturer of all-optical circuit switching systems for high-performance network infrastructure. The company's flagship product, the S320 Optical Circuit Switch (OCS), is a fully non-blocking, protocol-agnostic switch that establishes, monitors, and reconfigures connections between single-mode optical fibers entirely within the photonic domain, without optical-to-electrical conversion. This architecture delivers latency as low as 30 nanoseconds, insertion loss below 1.5dB, and support for data speeds from 40 Gbps to beyond 400 Gbps. Built on proprietary 3D MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology, the S320 offers up to 320 ports in a compact chassis and consumes less than 45W of power — significantly lower than comparable electrical switching fabrics. The company designs and manufactures its systems at its headquarters in Goleta (Santa Barbara), California, and has shipped over one million ports to customers globally. CALIENT serves a broad range of B2B markets including telecommunications service providers, hyperscale and colocation data centers, cloud computing operators, high-performance computing environments, government and defense agencies, and DevOps/test automation facilities. Key use cases include dynamic resource sharing in data centers (vCluster, vPod architectures), wireless backhaul and fronthaul capacity optimization, subsea cable network management, FTTP activation and testing, disaster recovery, cybersecurity infrastructure protection, and software-defined networking (SD-WAN/SDN). The company supports a variety of management interfaces including TL1, SNMP, CORBA, OpenFlow, and REST APIs. Founded in 1999, CALIENT has over two decades of commercial deployment history and counts itself as the global leader in optical circuit switching by installed base. In August 2017, Chinese manufacturer Suzhou Chunxing Precision Mechanical Co. announced a deal to acquire a 51% controlling stake for $100M, structured across three tranches. Chunxing completed the first two tranches (totalling $50M for a ~25.5% minority stake) in December 2017, but the deal was ultimately cancelled when Chunxing did not exercise its option on the final $50M tranche required to reach the controlling 51% stake.
