About Cajoo

Cajoo emerged in February 2021 as a French entrant into the burgeoning quick commerce sector, founded by Henri Capoul, Guillaume Luscan, and Jérémy Gotteland. Capoul, the company's CEO, leveraged his experience as a former general manager at the ride-hailing company Bolt, where he gained insights into logistics and large-scale marketplace operations. He reconnected with Luscan, a former McKinsey colleague, and they brought on Gotteland for his technical expertise as a full-stack software engineer to build out the platform. The company was established to address the growing consumer demand for rapid grocery delivery, a trend accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The business operated on a vertically integrated model, distinguishing it from marketplace platforms. Cajoo managed its own inventory within a network of strategically located micro-fulfillment centers, or "dark stores," each covering a radius of about two kilometers to ensure delivery within 15 minutes. This full-stack approach, controlling the entire value chain from procurement to delivery, was designed to provide a superior customer experience and potentially generate better margins. Revenue was generated directly from the sale of products, with Cajoo aiming for market-rate pricing comparable to local express supermarkets, supplemented by a small delivery fee on smaller orders.

Cajoo's service was accessible via a mobile application offering around 2,000 to 3,000 different products, including groceries, hygiene items, and household goods. A key part of its strategy involved securing a partnership with French retail giant Carrefour. In September 2021, Carrefour became the lead investor in a $40 million Series A funding round, providing Cajoo with access to its vast product assortment, purchasing power, and logistics network. This partnership was a strategic move to bolster Cajoo's position against heavily funded international competitors entering the French market. Throughout its operation, Cajoo raised a total of $47.2 million over three funding rounds from investors including Carrefour, XAnge, Frst Capital, and Headline. By early 2022, the company was operating in 10 French cities with over 100,000 users. In a move signaling consolidation in the European quick commerce market, German competitor Flink acquired Cajoo in May 2022 for an estimated $93 million. The acquisition led to the integration of Cajoo's operations and team into Flink, with Carrefour becoming a direct shareholder and exclusive partner for Flink in France. The Cajoo brand was subsequently phased out in favor of Flink.
