About Caffe Bene
Caffe Bene, a South Korean coffeehouse chain, was established in May 2008 by founder Sun-Kwon Kim. Kim, a businessman with previous success in franchising a pork and potato broth restaurant, was inspired by the popularity of local coffee shops during a trip to Canada. He aimed to create a brand that could rival established players by blending a European open-air café atmosphere with the traditional Korean "Sarangbang" concept of a welcoming room.
The company operates on a franchise business model, which fueled its rapid domestic and international growth. This model proved attractive to many retirees in South Korea who saw it as a viable post-retirement business opportunity. Caffe Bene's revenue is generated from the sales of coffee, beverages, and food items across its network of cafes, as well as franchise fees. The business expanded at a tremendous pace, opening its 800th store by 2011 and surpassing 1,000 locations by August 2013. The international debut was in New York City in February 2012, followed by extensive expansion across the U.S., China, and Southeast Asia.
Caffe Bene's product offerings include a wide array of coffees, teas, smoothies, and specialty non-alcoholic drinks. The menu is distinguished by its inclusion of sweet and savory Belgian waffles, Italian gelato, and traditional Korean-inspired items like the Misugaru (a mixed grain powder latte) and Patbingsu (a shaved ice dessert). The cafes are designed to create a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere, often featuring natural wood, outlets for electronic devices, and free Wi-Fi to encourage customers to stay longer. The company also established its own roasting plant in 2014 to ensure quality control from bean sourcing to the final cup.
Despite its initial explosive growth, Caffe Bene faced significant financial challenges. Aggressive expansion into a saturated market, coupled with ventures into other unsuccessful businesses like restaurants and bakeries, led to a high debt ratio and mounting losses. In 2016, a private equity fund became the largest shareholder, marking a shift in governance and the effective downfall of its founder, Kim Sun-kwon. The company has since undergone restructuring, including securing foreign investment, to improve its financial standing and stabilize operations.
