About CafeMom

CafeMom operates as a digital media company and social network targeting mothers and mothers-to-be. The company was established in 2006 by childhood friends Andrew Shue and Michael Sanchez. The concept for CafeMom originated from Shue's personal experience of observing his wife rely on other mothers for support and information, highlighting a market need for a dedicated online community for women to connect.

Andrew Shue, known for his acting role on "Melrose Place" and a career in professional soccer, brought a diverse background to the venture. He graduated from Dartmouth College with a history degree and had taught math in Zimbabwe. Shue and Sanchez had previously collaborated on other ventures, including the national non-profit organization "Do Something" and a precursor to CafeMom called ClubMom, which ran from 1999 to 2007. ClubMom provided parenting information and a shopping rewards program.

Launched in November 2006, CafeMom was quickly described as a "MySpace for moms," focusing on community interaction through forums, groups, blogs, and photo galleries. The business model leverages this engaged community for marketing, with Shue describing it as a "Tupperware party on steroids," where users interact with and review sponsored products, generating authentic word-of-mouth advertising. The platform generates revenue primarily through advertising and sponsored content. Within a year of its launch, it became a highly trafficked website for women. In 2010, the company expanded its content offerings by launching The Stir, a blog-style publication covering topics from parenting and celebrity gossip to home decorating. Over the years, the company expanded its portfolio to include MamásLatinas for Hispanic mothers and CafeMom Studios on YouTube. In 2015, the parent company rebranded from CafeMom to CafeMedia to reflect its broadening scope to serve millennial women beyond motherhood. In June 2018, the website was acquired by Wild Sky Media.
