Busuu is a language learning platform that provides courses for individuals and corporate clients. The company was founded in 2008 by Bernhard Niesner and Adrian Hilti. The co-founders met while studying for their MBAs at IE Business School and created Busuu out of a shared frustration with traditional, expensive, and ineffective language learning methods. The company's name is derived from the Busuu language of Cameroon, which is spoken by only a few people.

Busuu operates on a freemium business model, attracting a large user base with free access to basic content while generating revenue through premium subscriptions that unlock advanced features. Its clients include individual learners, who are often students or professionals, as well as over 600 global businesses and educational institutions that use Busuu for Business for employee development. In January 2022, Busuu was acquired by the U.S.-based learning platform Chegg for approximately $436 million (€385 million), a move intended to accelerate Busuu's growth in the U.S. and expand Chegg's international presence.

The platform combines AI-powered lessons with a global community of native speakers who provide feedback and corrections on exercises. It offers courses in 14 languages, structured around the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) from A1 to B2 levels. Lessons are designed to be bite-sized, lasting 3-5 minutes, and focus on practical communication skills through a mix of video, audio, and interactive quizzes. Busuu's technology includes AI-driven tools for personalized grammar and vocabulary reviews, which use machine learning algorithms to help users retain information. In late 2024, the platform introduced AI-based conversation practice with a virtual partner. More recently, a feature called 'Speaking Practice' was added, which uses AI speech recognition to provide personalized pronunciation feedback.
