Bungee Labs
Bungee Labs creates interactive web applications, and automates SOAP and REST-based web services
About Bungee Labs
Bungee Labs was a technology firm that operated in the Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) market, providing a comprehensive environment for developers to build, deploy, and manage web applications entirely within a web browser. Founded in 2002 by David C. Mitchell in the Salt Lake City area, the company aimed to simplify the complexities of creating interactive rich web applications. Mitchell, who previously founded and sold Viewsoft Inc. to Citrix Systems, brought extensive experience in GUI development technology and web application architecture to the venture. The company's history involved a significant restart; the original Bungee Labs, Inc. was first capitalized in 2005, raising $24-25 million from investors including North Bridge Venture Partners, Venrock, and Epic Ventures. Following strategic disagreements, a new entity, Bungee Labs Corporation, was formed in April 2011. This 're-start' saw Mitchell joined by his former ViewSoft colleague Dale H. Munk, who took on the roles of President and CEO. Munk's background included finance and executive leadership roles at several technology firms, complementing Mitchell's technical expertise. Together, they purchased the intellectual property of the original company and refocused on the emerging cloud and mobile development markets. Bungee Labs' core product was Bungee Connect, an on-demand platform that provided an integrated development environment (IDE) in the browser. This allowed developers to build, debug, test, and publish web applications from a single, cloud-based environment. The service was designed for professional developers and small-to-medium businesses, enabling them to create data-driven applications that could connect multiple web services and databases, a practice known as 'mashing up'. The platform automated SOAP and REST-based web services integration and managed application state, reducing development time and cost. Revenue was generated through a utility-based pricing model, where clients paid based on the usage of the applications they deployed, similar to Amazon's S3 or EC2 services. It is important to note the existence of a separate company, Bungee Tech, which was founded in 2017 by former Amazon employees Rajat Nigam and Charles Ding. This company focused on competitive intelligence and AI-powered pricing optimization for the retail sector. In January 2025, Bungee Tech merged with ClearDemand, continuing under the ClearDemand name.
