About BuildingIQ

Founded in 2009 as a spin-out from Australia's national research organization, CSIRO, BuildingIQ developed solutions to optimize energy management in commercial buildings. The company commercialized technology developed by CSIRO, which invented WiFi, leveraging over 50 years of R&D in building control systems. BuildingIQ's business model was centered on providing its 5i Platform through a subscription-based, software-as-a-service (SaaS) model, supplemented by fees for software implementation, consulting, and hardware sales. The firm targeted large-scale clients such as commercial enterprises, real estate investment trusts (REITs), and institutional property owners across North America and Australia.

The core of BuildingIQ's offering was the 5i Platform, an IoT solution designed to lower energy consumption, enhance operational efficiency, and improve tenant comfort. This platform operated on five pillars: data capture and analysis, advanced thermal modeling, measurement and verification, closed-loop predictive control, and expert human analysis. By integrating internal data like meter readings with external data such as weather forecasts and energy tariffs, the system would predict and automatically adjust a building's HVAC settings to optimize energy use. This approach aimed to reduce HVAC energy costs by 10-25% without requiring significant capital expenditure from clients. The platform was designed to evolve with a building, using machine learning to adapt to new sensors or alternative energy sources like solar.

The company's journey included an initial public offering on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) in December 2015, following approximately $23 million raised in venture capital from investors including Siemens Venture Capital, Paladin Capital Group, and Schneider Electric. At its peak in 2018, BuildingIQ reported revenues of around $5 million. However, the company faced financial difficulties, leading to its delisting from the ASX in September 2022.
