Bugworks
Novel antibiotics and immuno-oncology therapies for superbugs.
About Bugworks
Bugworks Research is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing novel therapeutics for antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and immuno-oncology (IO). Founded in 2014 by Anand Anandkumar, Dr. Santanu Datta, and Dr. V. Balasubramanian, the company originated as a spin-off from Cellworks. The founders united with a shared mission to tackle the global public health crisis of drug-resistant infections. Anandkumar, the CEO, has a background in the semiconductor and biomedical engineering industries, and previously co-founded Cellworks, which uses simulation technology for personalized cancer therapies. Datta and Balasubramanian are veterans of AstraZeneca's infectious disease research unit, bringing decades of drug discovery experience to the venture.
Bugworks operates on a collaborative, capital-efficient business model, maintaining a small core team of scientists while partnering with a global network of suppliers and key opinion leaders across multiple countries. The company is headquartered in the US, with subsidiaries in India and Australia. It has raised a total of $42.9 million in funding over 15 rounds from investors including Lightrock India, UTEC, Global Brain Corporation, and 3one4 Capital. Bugworks has also received significant non-dilutive funding, notably becoming the first Asian company to win a grant from CARB-X (Combating Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Biopharmaceutical Accelerator).
The company's primary focus is on developing solutions for multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria, often termed "superbugs." Its lead asset in the AMR pipeline is BWC0977, a novel bacterial topoisomerase inhibitor (NBTI). This compound has a dual-target mechanism, acting on both DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which interferes with bacterial DNA replication. BWC0977 has demonstrated potent, broad-spectrum activity against a wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive pathogens, including those on the WHO's priority list such as Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Currently in Phase 1 clinical trials, it is being developed in both intravenous and oral forms to treat serious hospital and community-acquired infections. In a major partnership, the Global Antibiotic Research & Development Partnership (GARDP) is providing up to $20 million to co-develop BWC0977 and holds the manufacturing and commercialization rights for 146 low- and middle-income countries.
In addition to its AMR program, Bugworks has a pipeline dedicated to immuno-oncology. This research centers on developing small molecule drugs that target the tumor microenvironment, specifically through adenosine antagonism, to treat solid tumors that are difficult to address. The company has a dedicated research lab within Cytecare Cancer Hospitals in Bengaluru to conduct translational testing on patient-derived tumors, bridging the gap from discovery to clinical development. This division leverages the company's proprietary drug discovery platform, DARE, to identify new drug candidates for serious, underserved indications.
