BT Group
The world's oldest communications company
About BT Group
BT Group, originally known as The Electric Telegraph Company, was founded in 1846 by Sir William Fothergill Cooke and George Parker Bidder. This pioneering company laid the groundwork for modern telecommunications by establishing the first commercial telegraph service in the UK. Over the decades, the company evolved, merging with other telegraph companies and eventually becoming part of the Post Office, which managed the UK's telecommunications.
In 1984, a significant transformation occurred when British Telecommunications, known as British Telecom, was privatized, marking one of the largest share offers in the world at that time. This move was part of a broader trend of privatization under the UK government, aiming to increase efficiency and innovation in the telecommunications sector.
BT Group continued to expand its services, venturing into broadband, mobile, and television services, becoming a leading provider in the UK. A notable event in its journey was the demerger of its mobile business in 2001, which was rebranded as mmO2, allowing BT to focus on its core telecommunications services.
In recent years, BT Group has been involved in several acquisitions to bolster its service offerings and maintain its competitive edge in the rapidly evolving telecom landscape. These strategic moves have helped BT maintain its position as a major player in the global telecommunications industry, serving customers in over 180 countries.
Today, BT Group stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of innovation and adaptation, from its early days of telegraphy to its current role as a telecommunications giant.
