Building the next generation of diagnostic devices for Urology
About Bright Uro
Bright Uro, a medical device company established in 2021, is focused on advancing the diagnostic landscape for lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS). The company's business model centers on the development and sale of specialized medical devices to clinicians and hospitals within the urology market. The global market for urodynamic devices was valued at nearly $300 million in 2023 and is projected to experience continued growth.

The company was founded by Derek Herrera, a former Marine Raider Special Operations Officer. Herrera's path into the medical device industry was profoundly shaped by personal experience; he was paralyzed from the chest down after being wounded in Afghanistan in 2012. This life-altering event and his subsequent experiences with uncomfortable urodynamics testing directly inspired him to create a better solution for patients. After his military service, Herrera earned an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management and founded other medical device ventures, including UroDev Medical, before establishing Bright Uro. His journey provides a deep, patient-centered perspective that drives the company's mission.
Bright Uro's flagship product is the Glean™ Urodynamics System, which recently received FDA 510(k) clearance in April 2025. The system is designed to replace traditional, invasive urodynamics, which involve catheter-based pressure testing that is often uncomfortable, traumatic for patients, and can yield imprecise data. Glean™ offers a wireless, catheter-free method for ambulatory monitoring. The system consists of a small, flexible silicone tube containing a Bluetooth-enabled pressure sensor that is inserted into the bladder, a clinician and patient software app, and a uroflowmeter to measure urine volume and flow. This approach allows patients to void more naturally, aiming to provide clinicians with more accurate, real-world data to diagnose the source of leaks or blockages and inform treatment plans for conditions like LUTS. The first commercial use of the system took place at the Cleveland Clinic, where the foundational technology was originally researched.
Financially, Bright Uro has successfully secured significant investment to fund its operations and commercial launch. The company launched in 2022 with $6 million in initial funding, including a $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). It has since completed multiple funding rounds, including an oversubscribed Series A round that raised a total of $32 million by October 2024. This funding is allocated to support the anticipated 2025 commercial launch of the Glean™ system, expand manufacturing capacity at its Irvine, California facility, and fuel further research and development. Key investors include Laborie Medical Technologies, UC Investments, Freepoint Capital Group, and the Academy Investor Network.
