About Bricoprivé.com
Bricoprivé.com was a French e-commerce company that operated as an online retailer specializing in home improvement, DIY, and gardening products. Founded in Toulouse in October 2012 by Marc Leverger and Julien Boué, the company established itself through a private sales model, offering discounted prices on major brands to its members. The business was built on offering flash sales, providing a curated selection of products for a limited time, which helped it attract a large member base.
The company's business model initially centered on event-based sales before expanding to include a permanent product catalog to meet broader project needs for both private customers and professionals. Revenue was generated through the direct online sale of a wide range of goods, including tools, gardening supplies, plumbing, lighting, and home furnishings. To cater to the professional market, Bricoprivé acquired the B2B platform Racetools.fr in 2017, strengthening its position in the trade tools segment. The company expanded its operations internationally, launching in Spain, Italy, and Portugal.
Bricoprivé secured multiple funding rounds to fuel its growth, including investments from Ardian in 2015 and a subsequent round led by Florac and Kartesia in 2018. This financial backing supported its rapid expansion, which included acquisitions and international launches. A significant milestone occurred in August 2020, when the French retail group Les Mousquetaires, owner of Bricomarché and Bricorama, acquired a majority stake in the company to bolster its own digital and omnichannel retail strategy. The founders, Leverger and Boué, remained as minority shareholders following the acquisition.
Despite the acquisition and initial growth ambitions, Bricoprivé faced considerable challenges. The company experienced declining sales for three consecutive years and reported significant financial losses, with a €20 million loss in 2021 and a €10 million loss in 2022. Disagreements with the majority shareholder reportedly led to the resignation of the founders in 2023. In early 2024, Les Mousquetaires announced the definitive cessation of Bricoprivé's activities, leading to the company's closure in the summer of 2024 and the termination of 174 employees.
