Online shopping club for fashion and lifestyle MoreLess
brands4friends was a Berlin-based online shopping club specializing in fashion and lifestyle products. Founded in September 2007 by Christian Heitmeyer, Constantin Bisanz, Nicolas Speeck, and Mario Zimmermann, the company operated on a members-only flash-sale model. This business model offered brands a way to sell overstock and off-season goods without undermining their brand image, while members gained access to discounted products from well-known labels.
The platform's business model focused on creating exclusivity, initially requiring an invitation to join. Members received daily newsletters and notifications about limited-time sales events featuring products from over 2,000 manufacturers, with discounts of up to 70-90%. The product range included clothing, accessories, sporting goods, home goods, beauty products, and electronics. The company's primary market was Germany and Austria, and by 2014, its user base consisted of over six million members, predominantly women between 25 and 44 with above-average household incomes. Revenue was also generated through a strong mobile presence, with its app users noted as being more loyal and frequent buyers.
Just three years after its founding, eBay acquired brands4friends in December 2010 for €150 million (approximately $200 million), a move intended to strengthen eBay's foothold in the European online fashion market. At the time of the acquisition, brands4friends had 3.5 million members and an annual turnover of €80 million. The company's revenue continued to grow under eBay's ownership, reaching a peak of €137 million in 2018. In August 2019, eBay divested the company to the private equity firm Regent L.P. Despite a brief period of profitability in 2021, the company faced declining sales in subsequent years and ultimately ceased operations on June 30, 2023.
