About Boundless Geo

Boundless Spatial, Inc. specialized in open source geographic information systems (GIS), offering a scalable, open platform as an alternative to proprietary, licensed solutions. The company's product suite included Boundless Exchange, Server, Desktop, and Connect, designed to help users manage business-critical GIS applications. The platform was built on open source technology and open APIs to generate location intelligence for enterprise applications. Their business model focused on providing commercially supported open GIS, including packaging, support, maintenance, and professional services, which aimed to lower infrastructure costs for clients.

The company was led by CEO Andy Dearing, a self-taught geographer with a background as a commercial pilot who transitioned into the GIS field. In December 2018, Planet Labs announced its agreement to acquire Boundless Geo. The acquisition was intended to expand Planet's business with the U.S. government and commercial agriculture clients. Following the acquisition, which was completed in 2019, Boundless and the Planet U.S. government team formed a subsidiary called Planet Federal. This new entity focuses on representing Planet's commercial products for U.S. government requirements. After the acquisition, Planet open-sourced two key Boundless codebases, Staccato and Stratus (formerly Boundless Server Enterprise), to allow for community-driven evolution.
