Bongdong
On-demand food and convenience delivery service platform
About Bongdong
Bongdong, operated by Honeybees Corp., is a South Korean on-demand O2O service platform focused on food and convenience item delivery. Founded in 2012 by Mun-jin Yoon, the company initially started as an errand service platform. It officially launched its mobile app, 'Ddingdong', in 2015 and expanded its business scope in 2016 by acquiring 'Please,' a premium restaurant delivery service, and adding pet supplies, groceries, and food box deliveries to its offerings.
The platform's business model centers on connecting customers with restaurants and stores, facilitating orders through its mobile application, and managing the last-mile delivery. It gained attention for its low commission fee structure, charging restaurants only a 2% commission, which was among the lowest in the industry and designed to support small business owners. In 2020, Bongdong participated in the 'Zero Delivery Union,' a public-private partnership project led by the Seoul Metropolitan Government aimed at reducing the burden on small businesses. The service expanded from its initial focus in the Gangnam and Seocho districts to a nationwide service.
Founder Mun-jin Yoon started his entrepreneurial journey out of necessity and had previous startup experiences before establishing Honeybees. He also co-founded 'Xing Xing,' a shared kickboard service, but later stepped back from its management to concentrate fully on Bongdong. Over the years, the company expanded its services to include immediate delivery commerce and various convenience services. However, facing intense competition and financial difficulties common in the post-pandemic era for delivery platforms, the service was eventually acquired by Manna Corporation, another major player in the delivery agency market.
